At a time when Sherpa people from remote villages in Solukhumbu slowly migrated towards the capital city of Kathmandu in search of better job, income and future security for their family, they didn’t realise that they were distancing themselves from their root culture, tradition, language and religion back in the village itself. Thus, they started feeling the need of the company of their people to rejoice their successes and happiness and to share their grief and sorrow together. So, the idea of creating a community of friends and relatives from different villages of Solukhumbu residing in different parts of Kathmandu came into being not only to share their happiness and sorrow together but also to protect and promote their distinct identity, culture, tradition, language and religion in communal spirit. Thus, on 1st Chaitra 2057, Ngima Nurbu Sherpa with few of his like minded friends and relatives organized a picnic program in Shankha Park, Kathmandu with sole aim to convince their fellow friends and relatives the importance of the establishing Kyidug, “Kyi means happiness” and “Dug means sorrow”. The response was enormously wonderful, everyone said big “YES” and thus Kulung Sherpa Kyidug was founded unofficially on the very same day leading to its official birth in 2065 BS.
